TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about.
“TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design — three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. In fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. Attendees have called it “the ultimate brain spa” and “a four-day journey into the future.”
The diverse audience of CEOs, scientists, creatives, and philanthropists is almost as extraordinary as the speakers, who have included former President Bill Clinton, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Frank Gehry, Paul Simon, Sir Richard Branson, Philippe Starck and Bono.
TED was first held in Monterey, California, in 1984. In recent years, TED has expanded to include an international conference, TEDGlobal; media initiatives, including TED Talks and TED.com; and the TEDPrize. Today, more than 1000 talks from past TED conferences are now freely available online at TED.com
x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created TEDx which is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. TEDx events bring together thinkers, innovators and artists in one assembly, with the intention of promoting “Ideas Worth Spreading.”
Innovation in collaboration
We are proud that our community supports a coordinated offering of three local TEDx events. As co-founder Tony Karakashian once said, “We have multiple events because Rochester has many ideas worth spreading in any given year."
We are TEDxRochester, where x = independently organized TED event.
We have a proud history of being one of the inaugural TEDx events in the country. We embrace the TED mission of “Ideas Worth Spreading” and dedicate ourselves to highlighting the brilliance, passion and possibility that is Rochester.
TEDxRochester is a 100% volunteer endeavor. It is through your generosity that we are able to create a unique city-wide experience in support of your “ideas worth spreading”. Please consider supporting this event.
The TED Organization provides a license to us with general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are completely self-organized and community-funded.
What you can expect at a TEDxRochester event
TEDxRochester, a mix of speakers, performers and TEDTalks videos combine to spark deep discussions and connections in a live format group experience. We often say, the highlight of our TEDx event days is the kismet of conversations that occur. We love that a passion for ideas brings Rochesterians together.
Our next event will be held on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at the Rochester Museum and Science Center. TEDxRochester’s organizing team is off and running! Tickets must be purchased in advance and will be available starting in March.
