Tech Bias and Algorithmic Discrimination

Courtney Thomas Jr.

Courtney Thomas, Jr. is a student and activist working for equity amongst marginalized groups in Rochester. His research addresses topics of human decision-making, citizenship, and most recently, algorithmic discrimination; all around the ideal of rectitude. Thomas’ interest in the need for social change was first kindled during his studies in Rome, where he observed how strict immigration policies affected refugee communities. He continues his studies at the University of Rochester, earning degrees in Neuroeconomics and International Relations, and a certificate as a Kauffman Entrepreneurial Scholar through the Simon School of Business.

Inspired by this international experience, Thomas got involved with grassroots civil rights movements and is now the leader of Rochester’s NAACP. Thomas plans to begin his MPP-JD program in the fall of 2020, as he aspires to pursue a career in public service and serve as DC’s first voting Senator. When he is not busy reading about civil rights affairs, he enjoys writing poetry, meditating, traveling and film photography.
